Simon Sinek in his youtube video makes a compelling argument on how businesses/corporations thrive with the notion that we must “Start with Why.” In other words, “what is it we are trying to convey to consumers?” Instead of focusing on what we produce and how it is useful to consumers, we must start with why do I believe in what I am creating…the big picture. We must communicate our passion and values. All businesses know what they make and how they make it, but few focus on why do we make it as the beginning point and their way of getting out their message.
It is a matter of perspective. Imagine walking to a new construction site and asking three men working on brick-laying this question: “What are you making?” You asked the first one and he responds, “About $10 an hour.” You asked the second one the same question and he says, “I am helping to build a brick wall.” Asking the third man the same question and he says, “I am helping to build a school to provide a safe and comfortable environment for my children to learn.” Which one would you put your trust in?
So why do we have Sunday School?
If Sunday School is to thrive once again under its name or another name, we must stop and look at “Why Sunday School?” What is the value we are trying to convey to persons not in a class? What picture are you conveying to future teachers and other workers?
Be looking for my “why” in future posts.
