Preparing for the Future & Sunday School

George Bernard Shaw once said, “Some look at things that are, and ask why. I dream of things that never were and ask why not?”  Though I know there are timeless truths/principles, I have tried to live by this quote and realize for Sunday School to move forward, we need to dream of things (methods) that never were and ask, “Why not?”

Part of the “why not” for most is, “I can’t do this on my own.” I would agree. It is time for us to move Sunday School forward, but it will take all of us working together. Here is my commitment to you as I realize we need each other!

I have begun something like the old ASSIST team model of Lifeway. We will have regional SS consultants to walk with you in your journey to strengthen Sunday School in your churches and others. I met with the Capital Region consultants today and will meet with other regions soon. Their job is to help you with training. As you know with our economy, the VBMB can’t do it alone. We will need churches to begin working together to make this possible.

As Dr. John Upton is quick to point out: “Countries where Christianity is thriving have Christian religious leaders who support, praise and encourage other Christian churches and their work, and they are expecting God to do great things in the future. Where Christianity has plateaued we see suspicious religious leaders of growing churches, and looking at what God did in the past.” We serve a living God who wants us to work together and expect great things. We need to do the same in our churches. With that in mind:

  1. What churches are you working with to see how they are creatively starting new Sunday School classes?

  1. How are you supporting each other?

  1. Is it possible to do regular workers’ meetings together?

Second we are striving to come up with creative ways to train. One of those ways is to provide this blog, and hopefully, you are sharing in printed form or by e-mail with all of your workers.

We will be seeking to provide intensive one day training events as well. Mark your calendars for Saturday, May 4th at Eagle Eyrie. We will have this training session as part of the Leadership Gathering that we do every year the first weekend in May. We will make this training as affordable as possible. More information will come soon, but we are looking at an age-graded, four-five session Sunday School training that day.

Third, we want to support each other by e-mail. Send me your SS Director’s e-mail address and I will add them to my e-mail grouping where we can discuss SS. If they have a question, they can send it to the entire group and see how other churches are being effective.

We are dreaming of a day when training will be done by video on our website. This is still in the dreaming stage but a real possibility in the near future. I believe in Sunday School/Bible study, and I am dreaming of things that never were and asking, “Why Not?”

Dreaming Big: I see the day when Sunday School lessons will be followed up with MP3 clips for students to listen and grow during the week! Yes, I am dreaming of things that never were and asking, “Why Not?”
