9 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. 12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. 13 Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.
14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position.[c] Do not be conceited. (Romans 12:9-16 NIV)
Every member of the group needs to know you care. As one of my mentors, Dr. Robert Dale, suggests, “Mission without morale leads to burnout.” Every member needs to know that they are to bear burdens and not carry loads. Jesus carries the load (Matthew 11:28), but we are to be about ministering with people. Here are some helpful ideas about morale:
- Show you care! Teachers should remember birthdays, anniversaries and death anniversaries, send cards or call as well as ask how they can be praying for their students. Members will listen more thoroughly to what you have to share, if you show them that you care beyond the class.
- Show Others in the Class that they care. Each class youth age and up should have a Care Group Leader to respond to needs and contact their group on a regular basis. This is like a deacon family ministry plan. (Contact me at email@example.com if you need a document to help.)
- Pair them up with another Person as Prayer Partners. When you are able to pair persons up, they will care for each other as well as continue to talk about the lesson for a few days. There is no way a teacher can help each person move to life application of Scripture without some reflecting after the lesson. You can do more with prayer partners through the week than what you can do on Sunday!
The bottom line: Every person needs to know they are important and that they belong. These steps will go a long way in improving morale and helping people know that others care!
